How can I control Algae?
To control algae, make sure the aquarium is
properly maintained, otherwise the accumulation of un-eaten
food, fish waste and other decaying matter will generate
nitrates, phosphates and silicates in the water upon which the
algae will thrive.
An abundance of of green algae may be due to excessive light,
try reducing the amount of light that the aquarium receives, in
general the majority of aquariums do best with between 6 and 10
hours of light per day. It is also important to keep the
aquarium well out of natural sunlight.
Adding more natural plants may also help as they will compete
with the algae for the available nutrients.
My aquarium is cloudy, should I change all the water?
No! this is the worst thing that you can do, if the aquarium
is newly set-up it will take on average between 4 and 8 weeks
for the filtration to become fully active, quite often in the
first few days the water will become cloudy in appearance but
this is just a part of the maturation process and will
normally clear within a few days. Changing all of the water will
just take you back to the start and the aquarium will have to
begin maturing all over again.
An established aquarium will sometimes become cloudy and this is
generally due to a break in the nitrification cycle, possible
causes for this include; over feeding, overstocking and a lack
of regular maintenance, If your aquarium is an established one
then perform a 25 - 30% water change and add a good quality
bacterial booster.
My pump is noisy Can I turn it off at night?
Your aquariums filter is full of beneficial bacteria which
consume the toxic content of the fishes waste, if you turn off the filter for
any prolonged length of time these bacteria will be starved of oxygen and will
die, this will possibly cause deaths within your fish stocks. Apart from
switching off to clean or service, your filter should be left running at all
times. If noise is a problem and your filter is powered by a external air pump a
better alternative would be to use an internal powerhead as these tend to be
much quieter in their operation.
